Kim Kardashian Channeled Cleopatra for Her Latest Photo Shoot

If ever there were two beauty icons Kim Kardashian could immediately call to mind, they would be Elizabeth Taylor and Cleopatra, so morphing her into Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra is so right, it makes our heads spin. That's what legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath did for Violet Grey's The Violet Files, and the results are breathtaking.

"For Kim I wanted to create a version that has never been done before, a futuristic 3-D version," says McGrath. "I wanted to portray a luxurious decadence by using elements of ornate facial jewelry constructed into shapes that pay homage to Egyptian culture, and of course to the rich exotic character that Taylor played in this role.”

As for why they chose Taylor as the inspiration, that part was easy—Kim has been a longtime fan. “I love Elizabeth,” she explained. “Pat and I have had conversations about how iconic she is, and how iconic Cleopatra is.” She added, laughing, “I would have done anything—I would have trusted Pat’s vision no matter what she wanted—but I was really excited that it was the Cleopatra vibe.”
And here's how you know McGrath truly is as brilliant as she is described (The article is slugged "The Genius of Pat McGrath Featuring Kim Kardashian West"): In order to interpret Taylor's eyeshadow, which was made from ground lapis stone and gold pyrite flecks in a fresh new way, she created pieces for Kim's eyes using wire, Swarovski crystals, gold metal leaves, wax, paint, kohl, gel, and glitter. The end product is so gorgeous, we can hardly look away.
