The senator representing Ondo-North senatorial district, Prof. Ajayi Borofffice, has described Governor Olusegun Mimiko as an ‘accidental critic’.
Mimiko had, during the 6th Gani Fawehinmi Annual Memorial Lecture held in Akure last week, criticised President Muhammadu Buhari’s economic policies.
However, Boroffice said in a statement by his media office that it was unfortunate that Mimiko kept quiet when his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, misruled Nigeria for 16 years.
The lawmaker added that it was unfortunate that an event which was organised to honour the late Fawehinmi was used to promote falsehood.
The statement read in part, “Governor Mimiko is an emerging accidental critic who is desperate for political relevance and has persistently fired shots at President Buhari even at the slightest chance since there is virtually no ongoing activity or project in Ondo State.
“Governor Mimiko is advised to sit back for deep self-reflection on his new-found role because it is absurd, hypocritical and nonsensical for a renowned exemplar of bad governance to advise the Federal Government on sound economic policies. What is Mimiko’s idea of sound economic policies?”
Boroffice, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, said it was unfortunate that Mimiko could not commend the President who recently approved a bailout fund for states to pay salaries.
The senator wondered why Mimiko did not talk about the improved electricity supply under Buhari.
He added, “For the records, I wish to state that Governor Mimiko is a prime beneficiary of the sound economic policies of the Buhari-led Federal Government. The bailout package for workers and pensioners, who have been exposed to unimaginable hardship by the Mimiko-led administration, is a product of the sound economic policies of the Federal Government.
“In addition, Nigerians can testify to a significant improvement in power supply and the Federal Government has unveiled an economic blueprint that emphasises more investment in people, education, job creation and the social sector to reduce poverty and diversify the economy in the areas of agriculture, technology, manufacturing and entertainment; national school feeding scheme and the conditional cash transfer to 25 million poorest households in the country.”
Boroffice said many of Buhari’s policies could not be implemented immediately because so much money had been stolen under the previous PDP administration and the President would, therefore, need to recover some of the funds.
The senator said Mimiko’s poverty alleviation scheme titled, “Caring Heart Programme” was unrealistic and termed it “Ruining Heart Programme.”
